Yes, it is. The Breton striped shirt, also known as marinière, was introduced into the uniform of the French Navy by a decree dated 27 March 1858. The number and width of the stripes on the marinière were perfectly codified: 21 white stripes 20 mm wide, 20 to 21 blue stripes 10 mm wide. The 21 stripes were chosen as a tribute to the number of Napoleonic victories.
